Boys claim share of league title with win
With a commanding 73-47 victory over Campus on Tuesday, the Derby boys' basketball team clinched at least a share of the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I title.
"We feel good knowing that, but that doesn't mean much to us yet until that's totally ours," said Brett Flory, Derby head coach. "Our first goal is to try and be league champs, but that isn't done yet.'
Derby (14-4, 10-0) can finish the job with a victory over either Hutchinson or Salina South in its final two games of the regular season.
Campus struggled to contain Derby's suffocating defense and offensive momentum. Derby doubled up the Colts for a 38-19 halftime lead, and the edge ballooned to as much as 32 in the fourth quarter.
Kyler Steadman and Taylor Schieber contributed 15 and 16 points, respectively, for the Panthers. Josiah Ray filled up the stat line with 20 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and two blocks.
"We're really excited that we've had all three of us come out and play really well every single game. We want to keep that going the rest of the season," Ray said. "I did what I could to be physical, match everything (Campus) did and do it better."
Austin Vaden finished with 14 points to lead Campus.
Panther girls snap losing streak against Colts
The Derby girls snapped a 10-game skid with a triumph over visiting rival Campus, 54-44.
The Panthers stormed ahead early, jumping to a 22-3 lead in the first quarter. Early in the second, Derby spiked its lead at 24 points with a 29-5 advantage.
"I couldn't have asked for a better start," said Jessica Fuller, Derby head coach. "I'm glad we allowed ourselves to have a lead, a cushion, to work with."
It turned out the Panthers would need it. After hitting 10-of-14 shots from the floor in the first quarter, Derby went 8-for-38 the rest of the way. Campus struggled on offense the entire game, however. The 10-point margin at the final buzzer was as close as the Colts would get.
Alyxis Bowens finished with nine points and 13 rebounds, but the production came in limited action. She was saddled with foul trouble all night, and fouled out early in the fourth.
Hannah Jimenez stepped up in her place, cranking out 16 points and eight boards.
"I just knew that once she fell, I was going to have to pick it up. I've been trying to maintain at least eight points a game," Jimenez said. "Whenever she started fouling, I knew someone else had to pick up the slack."
Kaitlyn Keck paced Campus with 15 points.
Derby (4-14, 2-8) hosts Hutchinson on Friday.
