Shaw resigns as Derby
girls’ basketball coach

After 32 years of practices and games, teaching and
learning, last-second wins and devastating losses, Bill Shaw needs
a break from coaching.
Between football, basketball and baseball, there isn’t
a month on the calendar when Shaw isn’t coaching. To get a
break between football and baseball, Shaw has decided to give up
coaching the Derby High School girls’ basketball team.
In February, Shaw told Derby Athletic Director Steve Shook he was
resigning as basketball coach at season’s end. That turned
out to be Feb. 29 when Derby lost a heart wrenching double overtime
substate final to Dodge City. Shaw told his players that evening
he was done coaching basketball.
“My wife and I decided it was time for me to take a break
from coaching,” Shaw said. “This is an opportunity to
spend more time with my family.”
