Frankamp scores 48, but Derby outlasts North for fifth place at McPherson TOC

By Kyle McCaskey

Wichita North's Conner Frankamp was unbelievable, but it was Derby's patient offense that proved unstoppable on Saturday.

Frankamp pummeled Derby's defense for 48 points on 15-of-27 shooting from the field, but North fell to the Panthers 66-61 in the fifth place game of the McPherson Tournament of Champions.

"His point total got away from us a little bit," said Brett Flory, Derby head coach. "You have to tip your cap to him, obviously. We were trapping him at every opportunity, running two guys at him every opportunity, and he still put on a show.

"Fortunately, we were able to, as a team, get this win."

Derby came out slow, falling behind 10-5 in the first quarter, and chipping the lead down to 27-24 at halftime. However, the Panthers battled back, tying the game at 41 after three quarters.

Early in the fourth, Taylor Schieber drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to boost Derby to a 52-46 edge it would never relinquish.

Schieber led Derby with 17 points off the bench. Josiah Ray added 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Derby's Kyler Steadman was named to the All-Tournament Team. Frankamp was named Tournament MVP. Frankamp, a junior, has orally committed to Kansas University.

"It's difficult, because he shoots a high percentage," Schieber said of guarding Frankamp. "He's going to get his 30 or above points every game. You just have to stop everybody else."
