Andover Central takes down Panther boys

By Kyle McCaskey

Down one after one quarter, the Derby boys' basketball team let Andover Central pull away in the second for a 35-26 lead it would not give away.

Derby (9-3) fell behind by as many as 13 in the second half and pulled as close as six, but eventually succumbed to a 65-55 defeat.

The Panthers do not play again until Jan. 31, when they will travel to McPherson. Brett Flory, Derby head coach, said it is a needed break.

"That's the best part, because now we get to go try and fix a few things," he said. "Andover Central is a mature team, and we're still very much a developing team. We showed our immaturity."

Taylor Lock led all scorers with 18 points for Andover Central, and Jordan Winter added 15. The Jaguars shot 49 percent from the floor.

Meanwhile, Derby struggled to find its shot. Kyler Steadman led the team with 14 points, but did so on 3-of-14 shooting. As a team, the Panthers shot 35 percent.

"We would've liked a little more ball movement. I think that would have helped," Flory said. "But credit Andover Central. They were really physical, and tough and guarded in a very strong and mature manner."
