Acura is saying goodbye to the NSX, its hybrid-powered flagship sports car. The automaker announced this week that 2022 would be the last model year for the electrified supercar. At least the NSX is going out in style: all of the final-year 2022 models will be of the Type S variety. That means 600 horsepower (27 more than last year) and 492 pound-feet of torque (an increase of 16), which together makes the 2022 NSX the most powerful and quickest road-going Acura vehicle ever.
The road, however, is not where the Type S truly shines. Acura took some of the lessons it learned from the NSX GT3 Evo race car to give the '22 NSX Type S upgraded turbochargers as well as 20 percent more battery capacity and 10 percent higher battery output. The 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, three electric motors, and 9-speed DCT transmission carry over from the current year. However, with the other changes, the 2022 NSX has proven itself two seconds faster on the Suzuka Circuit in Japan, compared to the 2021 NSX, according to Acura's stopwatch.
The hybrid powertrain gives the NSX a few options unavailable to gas-powered performance cars. One is Quiet Mode, which takes advantage of the increased battery capacity and output to let the new NSX remain in pure electric mode for "extended periods."
There's also Track Mode, with an adjusted allowable downshift speed from 7th to 2nd gear, so the driver has more control when trying to keep the engine in the most powerful rev range while on the track. The hybrid nature of the powertrain also takes advantage of the Twin Motor Unit on the front axle to add torque when exiting a corner without the driver needing to press down harder on the accelerator when in Sport Mode. Sport Mode also takes advantage of Track Mode's Rapid Downshift function.
Acura will only build 350 units of the NSX Type S for 2022, with 300 of them headed to the United States. That would have been enough in a typical year, as Acura has been selling around 250 units, on average, each year here since the second-generation model debuted as a 2017 model. A slight uptick in demand for the final NSX wouldn't be surprising, even given the car's $169,500 starting price.
Some of the available options on the 2022 NSX include a carbon-fiber interior sport package with an Alcantara headliner ($2,500), carbon-ceramic brake rotors with black, silver, or orange brake caliper finish ($10,600), and exterior Andaro or Matte color ($6,000).
