Patriotic lap quilts will be given to Derby veterans, as part of the Freedom Celebration set for July 2.
The Derby Senior Center is hosting Freedom Celebration at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 2, at the Walk of Freedom Veterans Memorial in Garrett Park.
“We always like to do something in July to celebrate Independence Day and our freedom,” said Dee Williams, senior center administrator.
This year the event has been enhanced with the new Walk of Freedom in Garrett Park. It allows the senior an opportunity to say “Thanks for all your sacrifices,” to local veterans, Williams said.
In addition, the Derby Senior Center Community Quilters have been working on a labor of love much of this year. They have created a number of patriotic-themed lap quilts.
Those quilts will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis to veterans who have registered at the senior center.
“Our quilters have created red, white and blue lap quilts to give to the veterans as appreciation for their bravery and commitment,” Williams said.
Along with refreshments, those attending the morning ceremony will be encouraged to walk through Derby’s Walk of Freedom.
