Maj. John Schloss, commander of the 931st Maintenance Operations Flight, welcomes Derby’s Kevin Ulwelling to the 931st Air Refuleing Group’s Honorary Commander program.
Derby’s Kevin Ulwelling and Justin Carlgren were added to the ranks of McConnell Honorary Commanders this past week.
“It’s an honor to be asked to join the group,” said Ulwelling. “The overlying theme from my perspective is to show support for McConnell and our military troops.”
Ulwelling, president of Midwest Single Source, will serve as the Honorary Commander to Maj. John Schloss, commander of the 931st Maintenance Operations Flight.
“I’m excited to learn what goes on behind the scenes at McConnell,” said Ulwelling. “I think the Honorary Commander program will help me gain a unique perspective.”
Carlgren, director of outside sales for Yingling Aviation (Cessna), will serve as the Honorary Commander to Lt. Col. Travis Edwards of the 344th Air Refueling Squadron, 22nd Air Refueling Wing.
Honorary Commander is a joint venture between the active duty 22nd Air Refueling Wing and the Reserve 931st Air Refueling Group.
The program pairs local community leaders with unit commanders in order to foster strong relationships between McConnell Air Force Base and civilian leaders.
Additionally, the program gives Honorary Commanders an in-depth look at the role Citizen Airmen play both at McConnell and around the world in supporting the mission of the Air Force.
“The Honorary Commander Program allows for a better understanding from our local civilian leaders as to what our Reservists contribute to the Air Force,” said Col. Mark S. Larson, commander of the 931st ARG. “At the same time, it also allows our military leaders to develop strong and lasting relationships with these local leaders. This is so important because as Reservists the vast majority of our Airmen live and work right here in the local area. I’m very excited about our new Honorary Commanders and I welcome them to the 931st family.”
Honorary Commanders serve for a term of two years, after which they graduate to alumni status and a new Honorary Commander is selected.
The 931st said goodbye to two Honorary Commanders from Derby during the ceremony this past week – Jody Baker, Meadowlark Elementary School principal, and Chuck Warren of Coldwell Banker Plaza Real Estate. Both have graduated to alumni Honorary Commander status.
There were a total of 16 new honorary commanders inducted this past week – four into the 931st program, and 12 into the 22nd Air Refueling Wing’s program.
Since 2009, there have been a total of 90 individuals who participated in the local program – 46 alumni and 44 currently serving.
“I think it’s good for the community to show its support,” said Ulwelling.
