HAYSVILLE – Campus High School’s population is nearing its maximum guideline of 1,500 students. What to do regarding being near capacity was one of several topics of discussion at a joint meeting of the Haysville City Council and the Haysville school board. "I don’t think we need to promote another bond issue until the economy is better," said John Burke, schools superintendent. Burke said when it is time to expand, another high school would probably be a necessity. The first consideration would need to be the amount of land needed, he said, as well as pricing, zoning and location of the land within the district. A plan would also need to be developed to determine which school students would attend. Burke said the district would probably obtain recommendations from Howard and Helmer, P.A., the architects who remodeled Campus in 2008 and 2009, as they had studied the district during that process. That $15.6 million project included renovating the theatre, classrooms and hallways; a new cafeteria, library, counseling and administrative offices; and connecting the different buildings except for the science building. Campus High School opened in 1960. As of last week, enrollment was up slightly, at 1,430 students this year, versus 1,424 for 2010-11.
