The Derby City Council has agreed to begin planning
for a riverfront park at the site of its current public works facility
at the Market Street bridge.
The city recently agreed to purchase 25 acres of property in a
new business park on the city’s north side at 55th and Oliver
and plans to move the public works facility to that location. If
that is accomplished on target in 2010, it will leave the city holding
land along the river which could be converted to park space, according
to Robert Mendoza, Derby director of public works and parks.
The council also approved a 123-page Arkansas River Corridor Plan
which creates a “fantastic partnership of communities and
organizations” along the river from northern Reno County through
Derby to Oxford and southern Sumner County, Mendoza said. The plan
develops a vision to establish the river as a recreational amenity
for the state and region, he said.
“This is our premiere public navigable river,” he said.
“If you want to go rafting on a public river, this is your
opportunity.”
