Theater lovers will be offered the chance to enjoy a comedy and the evening at High Park, as the production of “The Bill Show” opens tomorrow evening.

“The Bill Show” will be produced by Derby Community Theater in the ampitheater in High Park on July 15, 16, 17 and 24, all at 7:30 p.m. A performance on July 25 will be at 5:30 p.m. and tickets are $8 for adults or $5 for students and senior citizens.

While the amphitheater’s outdoor venue offers DCT an opportunity to present theater in a different setting, it also has its own unique pros and cons. The heat is the top problem and knowing July in Kansas promises heat, the productions open later than they might indoors, according to William Sparks of Derby, director.

Even starting later, though, the crew has found they fight having too much natural lighting. In “The Bill Show” there are scenes which call for a dimming of the lights and they hope the timing of the performance gives them ample opportunity to have diminishing sunlight, he said.

The amphitheater, though, has its high points. It offers DCT a break from the overhead costs of indoor theater and theater-goers can enjoy the park at the same time.

Sparks said he found the script to “The Bill Show” on the Internet and he presented it to DCT for an option in this year’s theater presentations.
