It’s a Life-style program
promotes healthy way of life

The Derby Recreation Center is once again holding their annual It’s a Life-style program, making this the ninth year for the event.

The program centers around the participants writing down what they ate and how much they exercise each day for a year.

“Research has proven that if people write down what they eat and how much they exercise, they’ll pay more attention to the food they eat,” said DRC fitness director Lynn Pelkowski.

National guidelines recommend exercising for an hour five times a week. The DRC suggests working out for at least 20 minutes three times a week, said Pelkowski.
“The program promotes a healthier life-style. The DRC is trying to help people get on the right track,” said Pelkowski. “We can also offer advice to help them achieve goals.”

It’s a Life-style participants check in once every three months and get a body composition assessment to keep track of body fat. For instance, normal body fat percentages for women should range between 20 to 32, Pelkowski said.

“Researchers say that after the first three months of exercising it becomes a habit, so all they have to do is stick with it for the first three months and it should become a way of life.”
