DHS students participate in Teacher Turkey Contest

Left to right, DHS Student Council Teacher Turkey Contest committee chairmen Grace Sha and Amanda Engels sell turkey feathers during the lunch hour to Kyle Downs, who solicited donations from friends and family to purchase turkey feathers for Mr. Pack. There is always a strong rivalry between the teachers to have the most feathers and raise the most money, and for the last 14 years, Mr. Pack has been the winner. Student Council raised over $3,000 which will be used to help 30 families in the high school who need assistance over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

Last week, Derby High School students participated in their annual Teacher Turkey Contest. The Student Council sponsors this contest which raises money to help families in the high school who need assistance over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. They beat last year’s Teacher Turkey Contest amount of $2,300 by raising over $3,000.

The Teacher Turkey Contest began last Monday, when each teacher received a large cut-out turkey, and hung it up in or around their classroom. Throughout the week during the lunch hour, student council members sold turkey feathers for 25 cents apiece or 5 for $1.Students could purchase the feathers, then give them to a particular teacher to add to their displayed turkey.

All the money that was collected is used to purchase gift cards to Wal-Mart. About 30 families will receive $50 gift certificates for Thanksgiving, and any money left will be used to purchase similar gift cards for Christmas.
