Derby’s Relay for Life on Friday raised over $44,000 for the American Cancer Society, said Rhonda Tenclay, publicity chair.

The first lap was the survivor walk, when those who are currently living with cancer or who have beaten it in the past made a walk around the track.

Derby's Mary Barnes,  who is currently battling breast cancer, walked arm-in-arm with Haysville leukemia survivor Mary Terry. Survivior Charlie Futhey rode atop his father Darrell's shoulders.

On the next lap, caregivers and family members joined in the walk and then all the participants started making laps around the Panther Stadium track to raise money to fight cancer.

A total of 25 teams and 293 individuals participated in the walk, a silent auction and luminaria lighting.
