Cancer Survivor Dinner is Thursday
Relay for Life Derby will be held Friday, July 20, and cancer survivors will be honored with a survivor’s lap at 6 p.m. and a luminary ceremony at 10 p.m.
“The entire community is invited to this fun and memorable event,” said Rhonda TenClay, publicity chair for the event. “There will be fun for the whole family, including children’s activities, silent and live auctions, including a home computer system, and much more.”
Speaking at the event will be Sandy and Darrell Futhey of Rose Hill, whose son, Charlie has been cancer-free for three years. Charlie is featured in a YouTube video in which he talks about being worried about other children making fun of him because he is undergoing cancer treatments and might lose his hair.
The family will talk about Charlie’s battle with the disease and how it turned out that he had plenty of support from his classmates, instead of problems.
Among the auction items are the desktop computer system, two weekend getaways to Branson, two golf packages, a Wichita theater package – with tickets to Music Theater, Mosley Street Melodrama and Cabaret Oldtown (along with dinners), a Wichita Wingnuts Suite for 20 people, and family entertain
ment packages with fun items such as bowling and food.
Several of the Relay for Life teams will be serving food items, so those attending are urged to plan to have their dinner at the Relay.
“All monies raised through the auction, food items, etc., will go to the American Cancer Society to help find the cure for cancer and to help in cancer patient support,” TenClay said.
Cancer survivors in Derby are also reminded of the Survivor Dinner on Thursday, July 19, starting at 6 p.m. at the Warren Cabin. The cabin is located at 9117 E. 95th Street South – look for the totem poles and follow the drive to the back of the property.
Survivors who wish to attend the dinner are asked to contact Kassie at Verus Bank, 788-2222.
“All survivors are encouraged to attend this time of free food and lots of fellowship,” TenClay said.
