Optimist essay contest offers $1,000 scholarship

The Derby Optimist Club is conducting its annual essay contest, which is worth $1,000 to the local winner.

Derby High School students, 18 years old and younger as of Dec. 31, 2011, are eligible to submit an essay, along with public school, home or private school students who live in the Derby and Haysville school districts. 

The theme this year is “How My Positive Outlook Benefits My Community.” The local winner will be eligible to compete for the $2,500 scholarship awarded at the district level.

The 700 to 800 word essay is due Feb. 15. Complete contest rules are available from the Derby High School English department offices or by contacting Bruce Quantic, Optimist Essay chairman.
